My Story
Hi! My name is Alison Neihardt, or as “my” kids call me Ms. Alison. I have a passion for helping kids in any way I can. I even named my practice after my passion, Helping Kids Counsel Services. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
I began counseling kids in Northern Michigan in 2008 as a traveling therapist. After a few years I was able to secure my first office with other colleagues to serve children in Traverse City. After many years of working in Traverse City a huge prayer had been answered, I was finally able to have a physical office in Kalkaska. I have wanted to work in Kalkaska since I began my private practice. I moved my office to Kalkaska in 2024.
I love working with children and teens. This is very obvious when you walk into my office by the amount of toys, games and books I have at my fingertips to work with my kids. It looks like a toys store exploded in my office!
I work with children who are in the foster care system, who have experienced trauma like divorce, abuse, death, and other childhood traumas. I work with children who are struggling in school with behavior issues or social issues. I also help children be able to identify their feelings from a young age to be able to communicate better with those around them how they are feeling.
My top priority is your child’s mental health. I want them to heal from whatever has caused them pain so they can be productive children now and in the future. I counsel from a faith-based perspective. I use God’s Word when it is needed and when the parents want their children counseled from that viewpoint.
Areas of Expertise
Alison specializes in helping children and teens overcome trauma, grief, behavioral challenges, family transitions, and social difficulties. She also offers Christian counseling for families who wish to incorporate faith into the therapeutic process, creating a compassionate and supportive environment where children can heal, grow, and build resilience.In Alison’s Own Words
Education :
I have my Bachelor of Science from Great Lakes Christian College in Counseling along with an associate’s in early childhood education. I have my Master of Arts in Counseling from Spring Arbor University.
Community Involvement :
I volunteer at my local church and church camp. I also have recently been on a medical/mental health mission trip to the Dominican Republic. (August 2025).
I’m available to come speak with your youth group class, or homeschool group on a wide variety of mental health issues such as bullying or other peer issues. I’m also able to lead a workshop in your school, church, or other place of business to help education on children’s mental health. For further information please reach out to me directly.
Other career goals :
I have written several books on children’s mental health. They can be found on Amazon by searching for my name. I also have been working on my Life Coaching Certification through Light University. I also create my own counseling activities. They can be found on Teachers Pay Teachers. In the future I hope to publish children’s picture books.
In my “spare time” :
I like to relax at home with my dog watching a good movie and working on some kind of craft project. I also enjoy photography and being in nature with my camera.
Serving Families Throughout Northern Michigan
Alison provides in person counseling in Kalkaska and secure telehealth services for eligible clients throughout Michigan. She regularly works with children, teens, and families from Traverse City, Cadillac, Buckley, Lake City, Grayling, Moorestown, Manton, Lake Ann, Kingsley, and Mancelona. She is dedicated to helping children and their families build healthy relationships, develop emotional resilience, and navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
